Choose the top one or two specific issues that you want to start addressing in school, and put it in writing. Some students find a proposal format helpful. A proposal shows teachers that you’re serious, you’ve spent time and effort formulating your plan, and you aren’t expecting them to do all of the work.

Make your proposal as clear, concise, and comprehensive as you can. Not only will this impress your teachers, it will also give you room to negotiate. You might use the following outline to start organizing and formalizing your thoughts.

Proposal

I. Goal (what you want to change about school)

II. Steps (what you plan to do to reach your goal)

III. Resources (the people and things you need to reach your goal)

IV. Roadblocks (the people and things that might get in your way and impede your progress toward your goal)

V. Rewards (what you expect to get out of reaching your goal)
